How to get Iron Nuggets in Animal Crossing

You will quickly learn in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that certain materials are valuable because of their contribution to vital construction projects on your island; as well as tools you will need to repeatedly craft – to carry out daily tasks.

In this article we will show you how to get iron nuggets in Animal Crossing.

You can make most of the flimsy tools, such as the flimsy shovel or flimsy axe without the use of iron nuggets, but they will break more quickly than the sturdy versions and you will find yourself reaching for the DIY recipe at your crafting table more often than you would care to admit.

Once you get the DIY recipes for the main tools, you will find that the sturdy versions of said tools – all require an iron nugget to make them.

Heads up, tools do break when used frequently, especially if you are just using flimsy ones – so you will constantly need to make these over again.

You can buy flimsy tools and versions of the better tools in Nook’s Cranny, but who wants to pay for something you can make yourself with the crafting recipe?!

Save your bells for furniture and items you can’t make.

Once you have built the museum, you are asked to collect supplies to help construct the new Nook’s Cranny shop. This, like any new building on your island is very exciting and you will want to get your hard hat on to get going asap!

The Nook’s Cranny development requires 30 wood, 30 softwood, 30 hardwood and 30 iron nuggets. The other supplies (read: wood) are relatively easy to get your hands on. This is because you are likely to have a number of trees on your island, which you can hit with your axe to collect wood.

Iron on the other hand, is more difficult to gather.

Let’s look at where to get iron nuggets…

Where to get Iron Nuggets?

Where to get Iron Nuggets

Obtaining iron nuggets in the game is not a difficult task in itself.

The difficulty comes with the scarcity of the rocks compared to say, trees.

You can only hit your rocks (or boulders) once per day which will randomly spit out clay, stone, iron nuggets and on occasion, a gold nugget!

If hit correctly, you can land up to 8 items from each rock but as mentioned just now, you will be very lucky to get all iron nuggets from each rock, although it can happen. In which case you have hit the jackpot – good job!

How to farm Iron Nuggets

Farming iron nuggets is easy when you know how.

You will need to stand next to a rock – these are the large stones that occupy your island.

Next, take out your shovel and press A to hit them. This will cough up the goods at random – up to 8 times per rock.

There is a time scale to doing this. Once you have hit a rock once, there is a limited time in which you can hit the rock to get the contents, so don’t dither!

Once you have started, be sure to continue to hit the rock until you have exhausted the contents.

You can also hit rocks by using an axe, but personally I prefer to use the shovel as this generally avoids accidentally breaking rocks (or your tools!)

While we are on the topic of breaking things, it is worth noting that if you have eaten any fruit prior to hitting rocks (whether you are using an axe or shovel), you will break them and only get one item from the rock.

Plus you will have to wait for that rock to re spawn again. So, if you have eaten cherries or any other fruit and plan to hit rocks, dig up a tree or two to clear the fruit log before farming iron nuggets.

A tip to get the most out of farming supplies from rocks, is to dig two holes just behind where you want to hit your rock. This helps stop you ricocheting off from the impact of hitting them, and enables you to bounce back to position quickly to hit them again.

Chat to a villager.

The main reason you will need to get iron nuggets quickly is to build Nook’s Cranny on your island. When you are in the process of this, you may find some of your villagers will help you out by giving you some iron nuggets. Talk to all of your villagers during this time, and hopefully you will get by with a little help from your friends!

Reach out to a friend.

Another way to get 30 iron nuggets quickly, is to have a friend from another island give you some. As mentioned in ‘How to get a ladder in Animal Crossing’ and ‘How to swim in Animal Crossing’, it is worth asking around for supplies from any friends you have on the game. A friend in need is a friend indeed!

Pop balloons.

Those balloons that float across your island can also contain iron nuggets when you shoot them down. Although this method is probably not what you want to rely on when you are in the process of building the new shop because you want fast and reliable methods!

Take a mystery island tour

Finally, a great way to farm iron nuggets, when you have exhausted all the rocks on your own island for the day, is by visiting mystery islands.

To do this, you must visit the residential services building on your island and access the Nook stop. Here, you are able to redeem your Nook Miles to get a Nook Miles ticket to take you to far away shores.

These islands also have rocks, where you are able to farm iron nuggets along with other supplies and bring them back to familiar shores.

You may need to shell out for mystery island tickets a few times, unless you strike lucky and get all iron nuggets from the rocks on your Nook island visit!

What are Iron Nuggets used for?

What are Iron Nuggets used for?

Iron nuggets are valuable items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, not necessarily for their monetary value (which is 375 bells in case you were wondering) but for their contribution to the fundamental development of your island (building Nook’s Cranny) and also for the crafting material they provide for DIY recipes that you will accumulate throughout the game.

As we mentioned above, iron nuggets are the main components of sturdy tools, with each one requiring one iron nugget to craft it.

They are also a prerequisite for the new Nook’s Cranny to be built.

You will also need to have iron nuggets in your inventory to build a number of the DIY recipes that you will pick up throughout the game.
